Summer can be a time for lolly gagging around at home, in your neighborhood, or at the beach. It hopefully is a time when we can, as parents, slow down with our kids and actually enjoy some of these moments passing us by. I remember as a young parent picking one good book and reading it over the summer to my three kids. It was a great way to end a hot day by finding a cool spot and letting them get all snuggly. I loved seeing their eyes light up and see the emotion on their young faces. It was especially rewarding when they were inquisitive and it sparked conversation amongst us.
Sign up today at our local libraries for the summer reading program and be rewarded with a craft at Knitfit!
Calling all m.o.p.s.! We are having a unique and fun event at Knitfit this Friday. We will be teaching you how to Create+Play with your pre-schooler using Organic Peanut Butter generously donated by New Frontiers Market.
There is no cost. Please send us an email if you are attending. There is more to Peanut Butter than slapping it between two slices of bread! See you there.
Our Wonder Wednesdays are a great way to enhance your 6-10 years old’s curiosity about the world of science. We now have a monthly theme that we carry through each experiment of the month. Our manager Tony presents the topic along with facilitating a fun experiment along with a hands-on crafty visual project.
People may wonder…How does having science experiments fit into a craft store? Well…for one, science is very crafty. It’s in a sense like mixed media, where we are taking ideas and techniques from one area and putting them together with another.
Creativity is not arts and crafts…it is complex thinking. The more we can promote lateral thinking in this day and age, the better our kids can adapt to this fast changing, design-based economy. There is still room for the left or right brain focused person, but why not help your kids become whole brain thinkers.
This month’s focus is the Earth, in honor of Earth Day. Our Science time is a drop-off event for one hour.
We are thrilled to be offering a Fabric and Fun Camp this summer through the Solvang Parks and Recreation. We will be introducing 5 different crafts throughout the week.
The first craft is “Learning How to Knit with Needles”. Knitfit began 13 years ago in my backyard by me offering free knitting lessons to my daughter’s peers. My whole objective was to create a safe social playground where kids could just sit, talk and do something productive with their hands. Now, after over a decade has past, I see an even bigger need for us to give this next generation a reason to sit, talk with each other, and do more than texting.
Mixed Media is like Community…The more diverse, the better the outcome! It has taken us a lot of years at Knitfit, playing with different products and figuring out which ones really are great to mix together, so I can understand the confusion for the beginning crafter who wants to do mixed media but does not know where to begin.
If you are 3 or 63, it is best to begin at the beginning. One step at a time is our motto. The thing we like the most about Mixed Media is that basically, anything goes except for the obvious. The obvious…if you didn’t know, is that you need heavy weight paper to do multiple mediums on.
